The Best Tools for Newborn Photographers

As a newborn photographer, you know that having the right tools can make all the difference in your work. From set up to soothing to props and accessories, there are countless items you need to create beautiful photos of those new little ones. In this blog post, we'll take a look at some of the best tools for newborn photographers. So whether you're just starting out or you've been working in this field for years, be sure to check out these helpful tools to make your job as a newborn photographer easier!

White Noise

White noise is great for newborn photography. The sound is calming and soothing for the baby, and it can help to get them to relax and fall asleep. If you're looking to take some beautiful newborn photos, using white noise can be a great way to make that happen. There are several ways to include white noise in your sessions. I use an app called Relax Melodies, but there are several different white noise apps options to choose from. Another great way to incorporate white noise is with a Baby Shusher. These are super popular for newborn photography and work great! You can grab one on amazon here. Whether it's a machine or an app on your phone, make sure you have a good source of white noise handy for your newborn sessions.

Space Heater

It's important to have a space heater to help keep your newborn photography studio warm. A space heater will keep your baby comfortable and cozy, resulting in a calm baby and an easier session. This is one heater that works really well!

Vibrating Mat

If you haven’t used a Lullavibe before you are seriously missing out! A Lullavibe is a vibrating mat that you can hold on top of baby to calm them, or put under your props or backdrops for baby to lay on. The vibrating motion soothes and comforts fussy babies and keeps them happy and sleepy. You can also use a vibrating mat like this for the same effect.

Essential Wraps

It’s well known that wrapping in newborn photography is the easiest way to keep a session going smoothly. Our Essential Wraps are just what they are called, essential! We love to use these wraps as base wraps with decorative wraps on top, or let them shine on their own. These wraps are long, stretchy, thin, but secure, and in beautiful colors. I use these wraps in every single session and they are amazing! See all of the beautiful colors here.

Pacifiers

Okay, this one sounds obvious, but having a stash of pacifiers can really save the day when the parents come with no pacifier. Plus parents might be grateful to have an extra on hand when you let them keep it at the end of the session. Be sure to ask parents permission before giving their baby a pacifier, but if they approve, a pacifier can really help to calm a fussy baby down and get them into that perfect pose. Grab some pacifiers here.

Matching Prop Sets

The last thing that will make your job so much easier is matching prop sets. Having accessories and layers that coordinate will speed up your session workflow and allow you to create beautiful and cohesive galleries. Check out our perfectly coordinated prop sets here.

Posers and Wash Cloths

Newborn photography consists of a lot of tweaking. We set baby into a prop or on the backdrop and then add posers and fillers underneath to get the perfect pose. Having a wide range of posers and fillers close by will help you to get the pose quicker and with less disruption. I like to use posing beans and small washcloths to shape baby into the perfect pose.

Rolling Cart

Newborn photographers have several supplies that need to be close by at all times. Having a rolling cart can help you to organize all of your tools and keep it at arms length so you can easily access anything you might need while you are posing. This is one of the most popular cart options. You can keep your posers and fillers, pacifiers, diapers, wipes, a baby brush, and all of your prop accessories in this cart for easy access.

Leggings

Leggings may not help soothe your baby, but they will absolutely make your session easier! Newborn sessions are like a 3 hour workout. You are constantly moving up and down, sitting on the floor, crouching for the perfect shot. You don’t want to be confined by uncomfortable clothing, plus you are sure to be sweating by the end! Here are some of my favorite leggings.
